What we say

top100On a nice day, it is difficult to imagine a better links than Waterville. The scenery is sublime and the course is fair if you can hit it straight. The ultimate location - totally enchanting, with distant mountains, rough seas, a river estuary, big dunes, and wild hares. This is a stunning course in the centre of a stunning natural environment - an amphitheatre on a huge scale. It feels like you are in a nature stadium, Waterville is the pitch, the surrounding mountains and water the 20-mile wide stadium. The stunning location may even overshadow the amazing course.

Waterville is undoubtedly one of the finest links golf courses in Ireland - and therefore the world - as well as one of the toughest. Sam Snead once called it a "beautiful monster" (it's 7,300 yards off the back tips) which just about sums it up. Anyway, how can you not love a golf course whose last hole is called 'Last Easy?'

Tiger Woods practises here every year immediately before The Open and it's easy to see why he is drawn to the solitude of this last piece of land before America. The holes tend to run from elevated tees down natural valleys as the layout cuts through the dunes rather than over them. Not only that, there are spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

The Top 100 Golf Courses in Britain and Ireland

Over 100 years old, Waterville embarked on a new chapter of its fabled history when top American architect Tom Fazio was commissioned to update the memorable Eddie Hackett masterpiece. Said Fazio: “Everything about Waterville is truly spectacular -  the setting is one of the best I've ever seen for golf”. The Fazio project went hand in hand with a major coastal protection programme.
Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman says: Now for something completely different, I’m going to slip in Waterville which is a gem. I’ve had so many lovely times there and I love the course and the people who are so friendly and gentle. Every hole has an exotic name such as Heaven’s Highway
Stay & Play: Waterville House offers a dozen rooms.
