Tom Morris and then James Braid made a fine job here, with burns, bunkers and angles of approach all combining to create a strategic test of a sub 6,400-yard links. True greens, tricky short par 4s and an internal out of bounds (the old railway) mean position off the tee is more important than enormous distance on a links which offers fine views from its higher ground.
