Inevitably most attention on Carnoustie is directed at the Championship course but, rather like the Portland at Troon, the Burnside is terrific. The short holes are a highlight – especially 5 and 14 – while 17 crosses the Barry Burn twice. Ben Hogan qualified here for his famous 1953 Open.
