Abbotsley Golf Hotel – Cromwell Course

What we say

Offering panoramic views across the Huntingdonshire countryside, the Cromwell Course is the younger of the two courses offered by the Abbotsley Golf Hotel.

It is the more forgiving, shorter course and, as a result, is perhaps more suited to the less experienced golfer.

Don't be fooled though, the Cromwell can still bite and the Par-3 11th is testament to this, with a cruel roller coaster green that's seen more than its fair share of three-putts!

  • 2 out of 5 Member's Competition

My colleague booked this course on Saturday 7th July 2012. It normally takes us about 4hrs to play 18 holes. 5 1/2 hours later, after we followed a members competition we found out why we had to wait on virtually every hole on the back nine - one ot the players in front was drunk! (It was a seniors comp as well!!) Also displeasing was the fact the 1/2 way house wasnt serving paying visitors "only those in the competition". We will definitely be giving this course a miss for the foreseable future due to this bad experience. Shame as the course was in fair nick considering the weather.

Played yesterday Easter bank holiday Monday. tee'd off at 2pm so got reduced rate of £15 for the round and a buggy only costing £12. Course is in very good condition. Some nice wide fairways so you can really open up with the big stick. Greens in very good condition but some are very hard to read and the long par 3 11th green is a nasty green if you get wrong side. Only thing I did not like was there was no course guide or map. No hole guide on the tee box so played the holes blind. Also there was only a few holes where there was directions to next tee. Lack of signs/course guide and the tee boxes could be better however a very good course at a very good price. The par 3 course is always in good nick and worth a fiver if you want to sharpen up your short game.

Played this course on a Saturday 12-03-2011 having done some web searching. Organised for 7 players all of differing levels, 16 - 30 handicap None of us ever played it before but were pleasantly surprised by the course condition - We have played at other courses for nearly £10 more and found not to be in as good a condition. Driving range facility Will definitely be paying them another visit - which in my eyes is a good indication of the enjoyment had by everyone on the day! We only had to wait on the tees because of the slower 4-ball in front (who were part of my party)

A great looking woodland golf course. The fairways and greens were all in mint condition. Some great looking holes like the short par 3 on the 2nd. Although the course was quite short it was hilly and challenging in places. I did found it frustrating waiting at every tee for 5 minutes or more. Overall it was a well rounded course with some lovely holes, but if you are playing at weekends you will have to be patient on the tees.

These courses must be reviwed separately, they are so different in every respct. Basically the Cromwell course and clubhouse are like an average municipal but with the play not as cheap. The main redeeming factor is that the greens are normally pretty good. Abbotsley course and clubhouse; Much more mature and interesting with a more friendly welcome at the start. Well worth paying a little more for. The scores I have given are an average of the two.
