Girton Golf Club

What we say

In 1936 PGA Professional Allan Gow founded Girton Golf Club. Twenty-nine years later he allowed the Club members to purchase the freehold of the land and the course was extended to eighteen holes. Following the addition of a superbly designed clubhouse in 1992, Girton became unrivalled in the area as a unique Club offering traditional course design enhanced with splendid facilities. Recently a purpose built half way house, which can offer refreshments and toilet facilities has been added to further improve the facilities available.

Members and visitors enjoy the easy walking around Girton's gorgeous parkland setting but the mature trees makes for an exceptionally challenging round. The fairways can be quite tight and approach shots to the cleverly designed par 3's certainly require accuracy. With greens rated amongst the best in Cambridgeshire and three daunting finishing holes (including one of the longest par fives in the county), every game will always be one to remember.

On the face of it Girton is a pretty mediocre course. It's flat, pretty uninspiring, poorly laid out and a bit of a doddle. But hang on, the greens whenever I have visited have always been superb, the welcome seems warm and genuine and the lack of yardage/apparent difficulty doesn't mean this course won't test even the lowest of handicappers out there. I like this place and I'm sure others will too. No particular hole sticks in the memory, you'll probaly get lost crossing over holes to play the course in what seems a strange manner and I have no doubt you'll walk off thinking why didn't I destroy this gentle parkland track? But after a pint in the modern clubhouse a bite to eat and a chat with the friendly memebrs you'll plan a return trip to this lovely little course. Girton won't blow you away, but I think you'll struggle to find fault.
