Eaton Golf Club

What we say

One of Norfolk’s unsung heroes. The county is literally brimming with outstanding golfing venues: the likes of Hunstanton, Royal West Norfolk and King’s Lynn quickly trip off the tongue. It’s true, little old Eaton will never be mentioned in the same breath as those other Norfolk legends and that’s fair enough.

However, little known Eaton is something of an undiscovered gem and you’ll certainly need to be on top of your game to get the better of this little par 70 belter which rather surprisingly meanders over rollercoaster-like terrain. With slender, sloping fairways you certainly need to be able to put the ball in the right areas so it’s probably best to leave the ‘big dog’ alone then. When we visited in late winter the course was generally in good shape.

There are some cracking short holes with the first, the 138 yards 2nd, being the pick of the bunch as you need to find a raised green sitting beyond a valley – come up short and you’ll end up in a huge sleepered bunker.

Located in the village of Waverton since 1993, the Eaton Golf Club has a course that will delight and challenge every single golfer, whatever their standard. Measuring an impressive 6,580 yards, the gently undulating, par-72, 18 hole golf course was designed by the celebrated Donald Steel, and is situated alongside the Shropshire Union Canal. Its overall layout is shaped by the natural features of the countryside, including a brook and several ponds - and these have the added benefit of attracting an abundance of wildlife, providing a rich source of additional pleasure for golfers who play the course, as well as being entertaining challenges whilst playing the course.

Declaration of interest -I am a member of Eaton Golf Club. Nevertheless I feel my assessment is totally justified. The only facility the club lacks is a full-length practise ground. The expert review has confused Eaton Golf Club in Waverton Cheshire with another course with a similar name.

This was a very good test of golf with some challenging undulating greens. There is plenty of water on the course to keep your mind occupied. Overall this is a very nice course and well worth a visit.
