  • 2.5 out of 5 You get what you pay for

I played this course in September (after a prolonged dry spell) when lots of other courses in the North West have been in great condition (Leigh, Longridge, Lytham Green Drive, Stockport). There is no warm up net, but a practice green near the car park, which leaves you ill prepared for a tough first 4 holes, particularly as a first time visitor. The layout is, on the whole, very good with good use of hilly terrain, although there is a fair share of semi blind tee shots. Some of the views are spectactular (2nd tee), but the constant drone of the M6 traffic can be heard for much of the round.  The tees are frankly shocking, with an equal covering of weeds and divot holes. The fairways are patchy with poor growth in many areas although the rough had been well cut back to allow an easy escape when venturing off line. Bunkers were well raked (players are invited to take a rake with them from near to the first tee), but the greens were very disappointing. Many showed signs of having been verticut, but the cuts were still open and the grass was way too sparse to allow for confident putting. Others were left fluffy, again leading to some difficult putts. This takes the skill out of putting on some already testing greens. Fishwick is a good track for the money (We used 2 Fore 1) but perhaps not as special as other reviewers suggest. Would I play again? Probably not.

A nice course with some sensational views. Emphasis on straight driving. Well matured, and a classic parkland. Can get a bit wet, but is better than it used to be and the wind tends to blow in one direction. New chef does fantastic food and they have Warsteiner on draught. Socialble members help create a good atmosphere in the clubhouse, unlike a few of the "cliquey" clubs in the area. I used to be a member of one of them!

  • 5 out of 5 A hidden gem

    By kip3kip

words cannot express the suprise and sheer joy of this golf course. We arrived to be greeted by the very friendly secretary who made us feel very welcome. After a bar snack (best sausage barmcake i've ever had) we teed off. The course has the best 5 opening holes that i have seen, especally the 2nd which drops down at least 50ft to the fairway, and the veiws over the river were spectacular. We are all mid handicappers and really enjoyed our round, so much so that we have booked another day next year. A real hidden jem, cheap green fees and great condition, well worth the visit.
