What we say
Hillside Golf Club is situated in Southport, the home of "Englands Golf Coast". The course forms part of England's finest stretch of coastal links being adjacent to Royal Birkdale and Southport & Ainsdale with Formby Golf Club a few miles down the road.
It may be overshadowed by its Royal Birkdale neighbour but Hillside Golf Club is one of the finest links' layouts around. It always proves a tough test during Open qualifying and its army of admirers includes the likes of Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Tony Jacklin and Peter Alliss while another Aussie ace, Wayne Riley, once told the R&A: “You can tee up for an Open on this course.” He wasn’t kidding either…
Hillside Golf Club is an absolutely gorgeous links golf course and golfing experience with the best back nine in England. There’s no doubt a round at Hillside provides a memorable golfing occasion – it has a splendid variety of holes and is not to be underrated alongside its illustrious neighbour Royal Birkdale.
Hillside Golf Club was founded in 1911, taking its name from its location at Hillside Farm. The first major changes to the golf course took place in 1923 when new land was leased from the Weld Blundell estate to construct a new 18-hole course. More major golf course surgery started in 1956 with the appointment of Fred Hawtree as golf course architect. His plans were finally realised in 1967 with the opening of the new, improved layout. Over the years Hillside Golf Club has staged some of the biggest amateur and pro events in golf.

Greg Norman was right if there is a better back nine in the counrty I would be amazed. We played in the open 4 ball in June, what a treat, very friendly welcome, nice bar area, and a comedian for the starter. Thought the front nine was good but then golfing heaven the back nine. Will be first on the start sheet for next year. Thanks Hillside!
I am lucky enough to get to play this course once a year and it is beautiful, the front nine is a good test but the work starts on the 10th, after that it's mouth open in astonishment some of the holes look like oil paintings and I always get the feeling that I just should stand there and try to some how absorb the course. Try it you will not be disappointed, promise.
Another course I have played and another which needs nothing said for me its as good as it gets.
the best of the 120+ courses i have played ! the back 9 is awesome, the view off the 11th is soooo good. I recommend this course to all
We played Hillside in an open 4BBB comp and what a fantastic day it turned out to be. The course is tough, very tough, narrow fairways and lots of rough. We played the course in perfect weather conditions, with very little wind and the scores for the day were low. A challenging course but what a challenge. A must for any golfer.
This is a breathtaking golf course. I can understand why Greg Norman stated that it is the best back links in Britain. Some beautiful driving holes that you can shape shots onto the green - sadly I never did it proud. I will play again when my golf is back on form.
