Hoylake Municipal Golf Club

What we say

It’s just across the road from Royale Hoylake, scene of Tiger Woods’ 2006 Open triumph. And though this neighbouring James Braid-inspired track clearly won’t host a Major championship its 14th and 15th holes are used for the Open practice. It’s a lot easier than Hoylake and you’ll fancy your chances of posting a good score, especially with several short par 4s. It’s a decent course at a great price.

In 1933 a group of gentlemen with a common interest in golf decided to form a new Golf Club. They decided upon the name Hoylake, and this proved to be the founding of this great club. It was not the first Club to play at the Hoylake Municipal Golf links however, this distinction goes to Grosvenor Grange Ladies Golf Club, which was formed by a group of ladies from The Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 1898. They desired to play golf unhindered by the social constraints of the times.

The Royal Liverpool Golf Club purchased some land and constructed a 9 hole course for the ladies. Some 30 years later the Parish council, wanting to increase public amenities bought the course and converted it into an 18 hole one with the aid of Mr James Braid. He was one third of the legendary 'Triumvirate' of the turn of the century golfers which also included JH Taylor & Harry Vardon. The course today is largely as he designed it, the only significant difference being the order in which we play the holes.

I think this has to be the best municiple on the Wirral and when the wind blows it is a test for any golfer. The tees and greens are of municiple standard but every time I play there I have never had cause to complain. There are many tough holes, especially if you are fortunate enough to play off the white tees as I have, and your all round game will be put to the test. Well worth a day out.
