South Shields Golf Club

What we say

South Shields originally opened as a nineholer in 1893 but was extended to a full 18- hole layout a decade later. More changes were made in 1928 and today the undulating, easywalking course features well-placed bunkers, fine greens and memorable views.

More Top 2-FORE!-1 heathland courses

Founded in 1893, South Shields Golf Club originally featured a 9 hole coastal heathland course. Ten years later in 1903 the course was extended to an 18 hole course, and altered up until 1928, giving the current course layout. The course is built on well-draining limestone, meaning the course rarely has to close due to adverse weather conditions. The course features undulating terrain and strategically-placed bunkers, resulting in a challenging experience for any level of golfer.

  • 3 out of 5 Decent test overlooks the beach

We played on a fairly calm day, and went into the pro shop, which I must say is void of anything noteworthy, not even a strokesaver. The pro is however rather pleasant, and sent us on our way to the 1st. So the first tee, a tricky downhill par 3 between bunkers. The course has some fair and testing holes, although there isn't really any standout holes, there are some classic risk reward holes, such as the dogleg 10th to a two tiered green, drive the green over a wall or lay up and wedge on...you choose. But if your card is poor you can always enjoy the brilliant views across the north sea looking to Sunderland in the South and Tynemouth in the North. The tee boxes were decent for the time of year and the greens are immaculate, slick and true. The clubhouse is dated yet comfortable, but the staff are friendly and the prices are extremely reasonable. I was later told a new clubhouse is planned. Overall I'd say this place is well worth a trip, although if you need to buy anything other than balls before playing go elsewhere on the way. I'll definately come back...
