What we say
A more than worthy neighbour of legendary Open venue Royal St George’s, Prince’s is very much a stunning historic links in its own right. It may literally be overshadowed by St George’s but Prince’s certainly doesn’t fall short in the pedigree department, having famously hosted the Open Championship won by the legendary Gene Sarazen in the early 1930s.
Not only that, unlike its superstar neighbour over the fence, it boasts 27 holes of quality links, offering three loops of nine (Dunes, Shore and Himalayas). Furthermore, again unlike St George’s, it is a terrific place to stay and play following the opening of the impressive Lodge accommodation prior to the 2011 Open at St George’s. The Lodge, along with the award-winning The Brasserie restaurant, is proving a major asset and also features an upstairs room, a fascinating mini museum dedicated to the club's glorious past.
As for the golf, that’s gone up a notch or two too following a recent extensive refurbishment carried out by European Golf Design. The newly shaped par-5 6th on the Himalayas, which finishes with a lovely left dogleg par-4 back to the clubhouse, is still bedding in. The Shore-Dunes nines are the main 18 combination and though the fairways are generally generous you have to carefully plot your way between the penal pot bunkers – particularly evident on the latter’s superb par-5 6th while the previous green is protected on the left by a cavernous monster.
Back in 1932 Prince's had its greatest moment when it hosted the Open Championship, brilliantly won in record fashion by American Gene Sarazen. Prince's celebrated its centenary in 2006 and marked the occasion by staging a series of prestigious events including the Amateur Championship and the Ladies' British Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship.
