West Sussex Golf Club

What we say

A most interesting and enjoyable track. Great aesthetic appeal plus design. A paradise of heather, pine and sand. Perfect turf, loads of heather and some scenic holes. Admittedly it’s not cheap, but West Sussex does provide a memorable golfing outing mainly thanks to an immaculately-conditioned course plotted on exquisite rolling heathland. In particular, you’ll never forget your efforts at the par-3 6th, a stunning 226-yards downhiller!

Heathland heaven which will tease players of all abilities – testament to the outstanding strategic test rather than power game which exists at Pulborough (the village in which it is located). Many questions will be asked at the stroke index one par-4 11th, the first of four right dog-legs. With heather lurking on both sides there’s no bale-out areas either with the drive or second shot, played with a wood or long iron. Hidden heather behind a rise and dense gorse bushes await to gobble up anything left. Some outstanding short holes help to make this one of the top-30 courses in Great Britain and Ireland.

A stunning layout with a South Downs backrop. You’ll struggle to find whiter sand than there is at Pulborough – the dazzling bunkers provide fantastic contrast to the dark purple heather and brilliant green of the fairways and putting surfaces. Unusually there are back-to-back par 3s at the 5th and 6th, the latter being the 22 yards signature hole.

West Sussex Golf Club, or Pulborough as it is also popularly known, was designed by the dynamic duo of Guy Campbell and Cecil Hutchinson and completed in 1930, although it didn't officially open till April 1931.The late, great Henry Longhurst wrote particularly affectionately about the golf course while Sir Peter Allen, in his book Play the Best Courses, rated two holes at West Sussex - the 6th and the 13th - as among the best inland holes in the country.
