Bovey Castle Golf Club

What we say

Bovey Castle has one of the best golf courses you can play for under £60. Golf World Top 100 editor Chris Bertram explains why.

The swish five-star hotel usually takes most of the plaudits at this superb venue on the edge of the idyllic Dartmoor National Park.

However the undulating, well established par-70 parkland course has a lot going for it too, straight from the enjoyable opening of a short risk-reward downhill par 4.

The two similar short par 4s running alongside the entrance road can be considered weak links but this 1926 design by J F Abercromby – one of the great British architects – boasts some terrific holes.

Par 3s don’t come much better, or stiffer, than the thrilling 3rd, played through a narrow avenue of trees to a near island green while on the intimidating SI1 par-4 7th you’re twice dicing with the River Bovey which menacingly courses through the layout.

It’s a great spot both to stay and play in peace and solitude miles away from the madding crowds. The ultimate Great Escape.

Played Bovey Castle half a dozen or so times, fantastic course, beautifully kept, and very challenging. Lots of water to watch out for! The hotel is first class in every way, and the food wonderful. The price does reflect 5* but good deals can be found on golfbreaks.com. Highly recommended.
