  • 2.5 out of 5 Need to sort out their greens

    By duncanmcdine

As my previous review mentioned, this is a tricky but enjoyably course to play... but I played this weekend (March 29th '08) and the greens are in one hell of a mess.  The bumps and burns make it almost unplayable (the hoof shaped marks which litter every green look like deer prints - must have happened over the frozen Jan/Feb time).  Aparently the Crown Course is equally as bad, so avoid this place until they've done something about it.  Glad I didn't pay full price, but still a waste of money at £14.  Don't know how I managed to get a reasonable score this time!

    By duncanmcdine

Played here twice over the winter 08-09 for just £12 (teeoftimes.co.uk) and enjoyed both rounds. The Cromwell course has a good range of holes with a couple of lovely par 3's in the middle. Its not an easy course (the fairly low SSS is tough), and I played a wee bit above my handicap on both rounds despite playing fairly well. There's plenty of risk/reward holes, none more so than the 15th - a short 250 odd yard par 4 with no room for error left or right. Played safe & straight off the tee, you'll easily reach the green in two, but going for it with the driver could result in birdie or tripple bogie! The 18th is a very tough par 4... you'll need a strong drive and a solid mid-long iron to clear the lovely old wall which guards the green (directly infront of the beautiful Georgian club-house/hotel). Its definately one of the better golf clubs in the area, and very good value at the £12 deal.

  • 3.5 out of 5 Good test for mid handicapper

    By Mike Goldsworthy

A great setting and fantastic day out. The regulars and staff are all very friendly and the undulating fairwarys and hidden greens make for a good test for mid to high handicappers. A wonderful setting and highly recommend, the 10th par 3 offers a daunting down hill challenge, the winds that welcomed us added to the test, only disappointment was the quality of most of the greens. But this time of year I guess you expect it, especially considering the dowpour over the last week.
