Sonning Golf Club

What we say

Berkshire boasts some great courses and this is right up there among the very best. Sonning is a classic J.H.Taylor-Harry Colt layout though it has benefited from recent re-working by Martin Hawtree.  Voice of Golf Peter Alliss has described the 17th as “one of the best short holes in the South of England.” The fast and true greens are pure class.

Always presented in excellent condition, Sonning Golf Club provides some of the best facilities in the South of England.  Genererally playing longer than its yardage due to the elevation of several fairways and greens. Although traditionally a healthand course there is now an abundance of shrubs and mature trees lining the fairways.

  • 4 out of 5 A gem in Berkshire

Lovely course, tcuked away between the trees in Berkshire. Some great holes, and without huge elevation changes its a gentle walk for most. The course was not in great condition when played, and that detracts from previous visits, recent renovation means the hole order has moved around, so I'll be visiting again this summer to see how the other modifications are doing. Famous for Peter Alliss commenting that it is has one of the best par 3's in the country ... not sure I would go that far but it's a good test. Whilst not hugely long it provides a good test of your longer irons and the SSS being one higher than par should give some indications of this. Positioning from drives will be rewarded with allowing you to see greens, I often found myself blocked from my usual shape :( Pleasant surroundings and good facilities. The bar/restaurant is just how a club house should be. Certainly worth a visIt.
