What we say
A mature parkland course in rolling countryside with a good variety of holes. Basingstoke is also well maintained and has good greens all year round, and a comfortable clubhouse atmosphere. The star hole is the par-4 4th which requires a long drive followed by a precise long iron.
Basingstoke Golf Club was founded in 1907, moving to its present location in 1928. The golf course was officially opened by the legendary six-times Open champion, Harry Vardon and the famous course designer James Braid.
The golf club is a regular host to a number of county amateur and professional events including all the major county Championships.
The golf course itself is set in 110 acres of deer park and features many mature native British trees. The par 70 layout is synonymous of a ‘Braid’ parkland design, with rolling, undulating tree-lined fairways, excellent bunkering and subtly contoured greens.

Fairways were wide when we played, trees were bare (a few blown down over recent bad weather). A couple of temp tees were also in use. Overall the the course was in good condition, the fairways looked fine, but the greens were inconsistent (probably in need of some TLC). Found it rather open and not much in the way of difficulty with many holes simple looking doglegs, with just a few bunkers to try and catch you. Fairways were wide open when I played(probably winter cutting). There is a short par 4 (about 260) uphill to a hidden green, that had some interest, and a long par 4, a little earlier, apart from that no real danger to speak about, lots of doglegs to try and keep interest Spent quite a time on temp greens during the winter months. Nice club house, and well stocked pro shop. Friendly staff. Not much in terms of practice facilities to remember. I would definitely be back in the summer to see the differences.
