Trump International Golf Links

What we say

top100The controversial – and breathtakingly spectacular – Trump International was six years in the making but after opening in the summer of 2012, has proved well and truly worth the wait.

Owner Donald Trump overcame local opposition and environmentalists to ensure his dream of delivering a world-class links became a reality with leading British architect Martin Hawtree emphatically producing the golfing goods. Mind you, the designer admits that given the stunning piece of land among towering dunes overlooking the North Sea he couldn’t really fail. He didn’t.

Much to Trump’s pride and joy, he created a masterpiece which fully lives up to all the hype and expectation heaped on it by its American billionaire owner and others.

Of course a round doesn’t come cheap and you’ll have to dig deep into your pockets to tee it up, but Trump International is unique, a one-off and guarantees an unforgettable golfing experience with the holes majestically weaving in and out of the giant dunes. With some sensational elevated tees among the dunesland, Hawtree has taken full advantage of the landscape none more so than at the awesome par-4 14th and the thrilling par-5 finale. As you would expect, TIGL is always in immaculate condition and naturally will get even better with age as it matures.

As visually intimidating a set of par 3s as anywhere and a superb range of par 4s which use the landforms imaginatively. One negative: the route march between holes breaks the flow a little.

The Trump International Golf Links is designed by Dr. Martin Hawtree, the acknowledged master of links golf course architecture. The championship golf course is a classical Scottish links. The course has a par of 72 and a maximum length of just over 7400 yards. The golf course follows a classical pattern of two out-and-back loops of nine holes.

All 18 holes thread their way engagingly through the dunes, rising to find views of the sea and coastline, plunging into secluded valleys, offering a sequence of superlative topography, landscape, alternating spaciousness and enclosure, panoramic views, a rich texture of vegetation and wildlife habitats surrounding the golf holes.

Each hole has 5 separate tees catering for all classes of golfer. Bunkers are placed to challenge the stronger player and not unduly punish the weaker golfer, and are turf-revetted in traditional style to combat wind and erosion and sand-blow. Greens have been sited in natural promontories and valleys and will be featured in relation to their setting.

Martin Hawtree’s layout isn't just 18 holes of explosive golf. Yes, the dunes are immense and really what most golfers expect to find at Trump Aberdeen. But there are also terrific changes of pace with two sporty par 4s on the front nine. You simply must choose the correct tees to enjoy it though, for these quick, hard sloping greens are simply not targets for approaches struck with fairway woods. Consider the green tees and enjoy your experience of this majestic links with the X Factor.

Trump is difficult to like but it's impossible not to love this course. The 18 bunkers on the 18th hole were a little contrived but for such a new course this place feels natural. Not quite playing hard and fast like a true links yet but every hole is challenging, interesting and fun. The course is routed through Ballybunion sized sandhills and almost every hole is isolated. I've played all of the top 60 and I would put Trump in my top 8 - pick any order but the Big 8 are: St Andrews Old, Royal Dornoch, Muirfield, Turnberry, Trump, Royal County Down, Royal Portrush and Ballybunion Old.
