Montrose Golf Links – 1562 Course

What we say

Montrose Golf Links offers some of the best history-rich golf you can play, but you should act quickly before coastal erosion takes its toll.

Golf has been played over the linksland of Montrose in this unassuming town for over 450 years.

Records confirm James Melvill played a game called ‘goff’ in 1562 and the land on which he did so remains part of the course of today. And you’d be wise to visit soon too; the stretch of magnificent holes from the 2nd to the 7th are being eroded by the sea and one fears they may not be there for future generations to enjoy – at least not always in their present form.

This is what one expects from a Scottish seaside course with wispy rough, small but deep bunkers and greens which aren’t especially quick but are unerringly true.

The view from the 2nd tee, which runs along the shore, is immense while the ‘table top’ short 3rd is a classic.

The 6th is a classic driving hole where you look all the way down the fairway to the pin while the 12th is a brilliant short hole with a green which slopes back to front and off on all sides. Miss the surface and a par is one to be savoured here. We can’t wait to go back.

With three clubs using the links – the Royal, the Caledonian and the Mercantile – this is a popular links and one that is an essential pilgrimage for any connoisseur, especially when it can be played for £60.
