Is there a better opening drive in golf? You are tested from the off with some wonderful holes. Only spoilt by a weak finish. An indifferent time in terms of conditioning but still a ‘pilgrimage’ course.

Set miles away from anywhere on the craggy west coast of the Mull of Kintyre, this is a devil to get to, but you won't regret the effort. Old Tom Morris described the quirky duneland as "created by the Almighty to play golf on" some 100 years ago and little has changed since. It has one of the best 1st holes anywhere, a par 4 where your first tee shot has to carry 200 yards of the Atlantic Ocean to find dry land.
