Western Gailes Golf Club

What we say

top100One of the most under-rated links, due to the proximity of its famous Ayrshire neighbours. A links that wears no make-up. It doesn’t stand out among the crowd and demand you visit. It sits quietly and waits to be discovered.

Playing pedigree; Ayrshire is spoilt for quality golf courses like no other area in Britain. Most famous of the lot is Royal Troon, bt most locals rate Western Gailes as their favourite. The club has staged several Scottish amateur Championships as well as the Curtis Cup and is simply one of the most beautiful courses in the country. You'll be struck by the succession of stunning holes weaving their way between plentiful gorse, with fairways punctuated by tough pot bunkers and challenging greens. The only downside? It's so good that plenty of visitors come from the States – and the green fee reflects that.

The club is 108 years old, and unusually for a course only two fairways wide, the clubhouse is quite central. A wonderfully natural links, with pot bunkers, three meandering burns, slippery small greens and an out-of-bounds fence all the way back from the 14th.

Rated as one of their favourite links in the area by most locals, Western Gailes is definitely a hidden gem in an area that is dominated by Turnberry and Royal Troon.

The course has been used as a final qualifying venue when the Open is played at either Turnberry or Royal Troon.

The undulating fairways interrupted by three burns means that this course needs to be played with precision rather than power. Hitting to greens that are placed naturally within the environment and protected by deep bunkers proves difficult.

The clubhouse overlooks the course and is a great place to relax after the round.
