Craigmillar Park Golf Club

What we say

Craigmillar Park Golf Club boasts an interesting, tough golf course situated close to Edinburgh city centre and next to the Royal Observatory.

This is a good condition course with wonderful scenic views of the Scottish capital.

The shortest hole on the course, the heavily guarded par 3 11th, is the most heavily bunkered, demanding complete focus and respect for the hazards from all levels of golfer; particularly in the summer when the small target green is difficult to hold.

Perhaps the most standout hole, the par 3 15th, is one of the most difficult but most entertaining. Players must find a two-tiered green from an elevated tee position, avoiding not only four sand traps, but the Braid Burn water hazard also, which dissects the fairway in front of the green. Club selection is key here and players must avoid the urge to club up, as this hole plays a lot shorter than its yardage, due to the elevated tee. Many rounds could be won or lost here.

Craigmillar Park is a decent course, but can be frustrating for the less skilled golfers as too many blind shots rattle the nerves of those driving off the tee.

Situated within the boundaries of the city of Edinburgh, near the Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill, Craigmillar Park Golf Club is a parkland course with panoramic views over the city of Edinburgh to East Lothian and the Perthshire Hills.

The golf club was constituted in 1895 and moved to its present location in 1907. It was extended to 18 holes (designed by James Braid) in 1927. The golf course is 5,851 yards long and hosts the 72-hole Craigmillar Park Open in early April each year.

  • 4 out of 5 Great course and a friendly clubhouse.

I have played this course a few times and the course is always in good condition. It is a very fair course with great greens. The food in the clubhouse is excellent and the people are friendly.

  • 4 out of 5 Wow, quietly unassuming but stunning in places

This course has the best greens in Edinburgh bar none.  This course sits above Edinburgh over looking Arthurs Seat and The Craggs but doesn't have the stunning views that Braid Hills has.  It is also very hilly and in places that detracts from the course due to the sometimes playing off slightly uneven lies.  But have I to say that I this is a gem of a course.  The greens are that of a links due to being on a hill that is always windy (makes you wonder how good Braid Hills could be if it was private).  One thing though, beware of the fast greens when approaching from above (which is quite often).  You'll find yourself over the back very often.
