Gullane Golf Course Number Two

What we say

Although Gullane Number Two cannot match Gullane Number One, it’s a fantastic links course in its own right and boasts some of the best conditioning you could hope to play all year round.

There is no doubt most golfers detect a difference in quality between No.1 and No.2 courses at Gullane, but when the links you are being compared to it is one of the best in Britain, comparisons are almost certain to be at least mildly unflattering.

Gullane No.2 was set down by two-time Open champion Willie Park Jr in 1898, and runs alongside No. 1 for the first seven holes.

Its routing then sweeps down to a nature reserve next to Aberlady Bay before turning towards home from the 13th tee with the prevailing wind, down Gullane Hill.

It is actually favoured by many locals and its magnificent views and fabulous greens partly explain that.

No. 2 is also renowned for the challenge of its par 3s – not least the 215-yard 11t, an exacting downhill test where club selection is as difficult as the shot itself.

At just under 6,400 yards, No. 2 is shorter than its older sibling but – helped by 107 bunkers – has been an open qualifier in 1908 as well the 2000 Seniors Open Amateur. Its Bent fairways and fescue greens are always in impeccable condition all year round.

I went with a group of 8 people for a 3 day break in Scotland taking in this course in while there. This is one of the best courses I have ever played at, a tough course but if managed correctly you will not go far wrong. Local knowledge of the course is an advantage but half the enjoyment of playing any new course is working out which club and shot you take. Very friendly staff and can not recommend this course highly enough I will be returning.
