Wenvoe Castle Golf Club

What we say

Set in the scenic countryside in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan and believed to be one of the finest inland courses in the valleys. This superb James Braid par-72 parkland track is overlooked by the elegantly refurbished 18th century clubhouse, a Grade II listed building.

Set in the scenic countryside in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan the well maintained parkland course is long recognised as one of the finest challenges of golf in Wales. Designed by five times Open winner James Braid the course comprises two loops of nine holes each beginning and ending near the imposing 18th Century Mansion House that has served as the clubhouse for over 70 years.

The first nine holes enjoy an undulating terrain leading to spectacular views across the Bristol Channel and neighbouring countryside. In contrast the second nine are relatively flat but a carefully phased introduction of tree planting is not only a delight to view but ensure an interesting yet fair challenge.

Overall the par 72 6544 yard provides an interesting mix of testing par 3’s, demanding par 4’s and stern par 5’s. Each hole has its own individual character and superb greens with tricky slopes and subtle borrows add to the pressures of putting.

The opening par 5 hole from an elevated tee requires an accurate drive over a road and stream and sets the standard for the round ahead. The signature hole must be the 10th hole, a par 4, which requires a careful drive before an approach shot over a lake to a well guarded and elevated green. Many a decent score on the front nine has been found its watery grave on this hole.

The finishing three holes, all par 4’s are particularly demanding especially when the prevailing westerly winds blow. However the final hole will probably be remembered not only for its golfing challenge but also the spectacular setting of the imposing clubhouse which acts as magnificent and fitting backdrop to the 18th green.
