Golf de Seignosse

What we say

When this Robert Von Hagge design from 1989 is described, it is usually in a fearful tone. That caution and reverence is not misplaced. This is a beautiful course among mature trees and natural water features – but it is also an exacting challenge.

It should categorically be on your itinerary when visiting Aquitaine… just don’t consume too much of the famous local produce the night before. Also, play off the 6,100-yard yellow tees. The whites at nearly 6,500 are for really strong players only.

Seignosse doesn’t need length to challenge; in fact that is its great quality. A woodland-heathland hybrid, it also has design elements more often seen on an old seaside links: sporty par 4s such as the downhill 2nd which is encircled by water; humps and bumps on the 6th that remind one of Royal St George’s; and clever dog-legs such as the 9th, which ends on an acutely-elevated green.

The front nine might be the better half but holes such as the thrilling par-5 11th maintain a high standard coming home. The cerebral Von Hagge mixed it up well, giving us several short 4s among the longer-hitting tests. The cool 14th is one, just 337 yards off even the whites but where your approach has to fly over water and locate a narrow, tiered green tucked away in a corner in a characterful little complex. Brilliant. Fight your way up the long, tree-lined 18th and you will relish refreshment on the balcony of the chic clubhouse.

Some view Seignosse as too exacting – Tour star Gregory Havret, no less, told us even he thinks it is a bit too difficult off the tips – but the overriding opinion of this Biarritz-based course is one of admiration. Designed by the American Archietect Robert von Hagge, the course was meant to mastercraft. The 18 hole par 72 course has a legendary reputation which will not deceive even the most demanding golfers. The course winds through the forest, surrounded by majestic pine and oak trees, a pleasure to play for all golfers.

  • 4 out of 5 Seve Ballestero's favourite course?

    By Dekuno

I played Seignosse in September 2014 together with two members from the club. It was an excellent course in mint condition. Very challenging especially for people that are not straight from tee! Apparently Seignosse was one of Seve Ballestero's favourite course, and I won't argue that! It's a must if you are in the area. Also. The course do have a range and putting green.
