Royal Dublin Golf Club

What we say

Royal Dublin doesn’t always get the praise it deserves as one of the best golf courses in Ireland.

It’s difficult to know why Royal Dublin isn’t always mentioned in discussion of Ireland’s finest courses but we feel this position – just above courses that are routinely candidates for our GB&I ranking – is reward for its excellence.

This Harry Colt design among the dunes of Bull Island in a classic out-and-back format which, following the intervention of Martin Hawtree is now over 7,000 yards with 18 new raised, contoured greens. Clayton, Pont and DeVries are now casting their eye over it.

This traditional links is steeped in history. Not only was it created after Captain Bligh of Mutiny of the Bounty fame built a sea wall to aid shipping routes (which meant sand formed, creating an island), the course was laid out by the famed Colt (after being ruined during WW1) and remains the home club of Irish icon Christy O’Connor.

It sits on Bull Island – a UNESCO site noted for its flora and fauna – in Dublin Bay and gives you everything you want from a seasoned links; gorgeous turf, cool green complexes, wonderful par 3s (predictably so given the designer) and a natural feel.

Hawtree tightened it up in recent times to ensure it remains a stringent out-and-back test, while out of bounds are a regular feature in the middle of the outward nine as well as on the distinctive finale (think of the 1st at Hoylake).

The one thing you don’t get are especially refreshing views; the sea is often seen and not heard on the opening half and at other times the backdrop is of heavy industrial. You would be cheating yourself if you let that put you off coming here though.
