Club de Golf El Rompido

What we say

Like playing in Spain, but getting just a little cheesed off with the conveyor-belt system in operation at most of the well-known and long-established resort golf courses? If so, you should take a serious look at the El Rompido golf resort on the Costa de la Luz.

The 18-hole golf course is 6,500 yards long and has a nice mix of holes – some fairly open and with a links feel about them, other taking full advantage of some very attractive woodland. One of the great selling points is the fact that development is very restricted and most of the adjoining land is protected natural park.

Accommodation is plentiful, and there’s a couple of decent-sized and sunspoilt towns nearby boasting plenty of bars and restaurants.

The new kid on the Huelva block, Club de Golf El Rompido is a tactician's golf course, winding through cork trees and offering a series of risk-reward shots.

The back nine, though more open, has all the water – some if it in the form of salt marsh, which helps the golf course blend into its natural surroundings.

A reasonably level course, a little water, lovely greens, some challenging holes, a little bit of something for every handicap. But they ran out of buggies and we had to walk.
