My Favourite Hole – Nicolas Colsaerts

16th, Himmerland

Himmerland

This is the hole that everyone was talking about on the European Tour for weeks after our visit there for the Made in Denmark tournament in August. It’s a par 3 of just 128 yards, so length clearly is not the issue here. But the crowd surrounding the green and the atmosphere was just incredible.

A huge embankment semi-circles behind the green like a vast amphitheatre and when we walked onto the tee there it was just spectacular. The tee is set slightly below the green so all you could see as you were standing over the ball was the flag and a huge wall of 5,000 spectators behind it. I think all the players tweeted pictures of it that week!

In time, I believe it will become one of the iconic holes on the European Tour, like the 18th at the Lancome and the 18th at Wentworth. But, unlike those long closing holes, this is a short hole and there’s something special about that.

It has quite a funky green, too, with a big crest in the middle, bunkers at the front and another one behind, so although it’s quite short, you have to fight with your concentration and be very accurate with your tee shot yardage.

It’s not quite as mad as the famous 16th at the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, which can get pretty rowdy, but the gallery here claps in rhythm as you play your shot, so the atmosphere is great.
