West Lancs was exceptionally unlucky not to make it into our 2010 Top 100, but following a few tweaks, it has taken its place among the elite of Britain and Ireland this time. With such stellar links such as Formby, Birkdale and Hillside nearby, West Lancs has also suffered in comparison, without anything approaching justification. Now, it gains appropriate recognition for its quality and determination to get even better.

Following recent championships which were staged here, it became apparent that one or two of the par 5s needed tightening up. Donald Steel looked at this aspect and on the 16th advised that they re-site the fairway bunkers. On the 11th, they have moved the championship tee further over towards the railway – a classic links par 5 alongside the ubiquitous train track – and this has really changed the drive angle and made it a more challenging hole.

A short game area close to the clubhouse has just opened, helping visitors prepare for the task of chipping onto the small greens they will inevitably miss on the course. Finally, they offer visitors their green fee back if they get mud on their shoes – only a true links course can make such an offer!
