James Braid was brought up in neighbouring Earlsferry and learned the game on the traditional links of Elie, whose dog-legging 13th he described as the finest hole in the country. One of Scotland’s oldest courses, it begins with a blind shot over a hill. There are no par 5s to attack and only two par 3s – both of which are delightful.
