A new parkland course which is a great addition to a coastline packed with world-class links. Set in 600 acres of glorious country estate, Rowallan also boasts two fine castles. Rowallan Castle is the latest successful example in Britain of a collaboration between former European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie and European Golf Design. While Monty visited the site on several occasions – it is after all in his native Ayrshire – most of the technical design work was carried out by Ross McMurray,
the man responsible for revamping Celtic Manor’s Twenty Ten course. It opened only a year ago after a lengthy growing in period and though it will mature further into its surroundings, it already plays very nicely. Three par 5s on the back nine are possibly the pick of the crop – the uphill 13th being the most exacting – while  the par 3s on the outward half all feature water and all are classy short holes. There is also a 19th hole, The Decider,  which aims to provide a way to settle matchplay games which finish all square. A 155-yard par 3 might mean a few trips back to the tee though!
