West Midlands Golf Club

Last Updated:

What we say

Though it opened only three years ago, it's a good, fun place to play with a decent variety of holes. It also has a magnificent clubhouse. The star hole has to be the par-3 18th. It's a replica of the 17th at Sawgrass, Florida, with the green sitting in the middle of the lake.

West Midlands Golf Club is a new golf club ( Opened June 2003 ) located between Meriden and Balsall Common in Solihull and has been built to the highest specification.  United States Golf Association tees and greens and an extensive drainage system allow all year round play without the need for temporary tees and greens. The golf course has been designed within the 234 acre site to complement the undulating parkland landscape which is part of the Forest of Arden.  The golf course is of a modern English design with American influence, over rolling parkland with mature and newly planted trees and subtle contouring, it also has several holes demanding tee shots and approach shots over water including the signature hole, the 18th a Par 3 with an island green.

  • 4 out of 5 Great value

Played west midlands midweek for £15 and a free meal afterwards - fantastic value. some great hole layouts with water hazards and dog-legs, 18th island green fantastic finishing hole. greens good for a pay and play, bunkers need a bit of tlc. all in all great experience.

  • 4 out of 5 good course

    By clay

The West Mids has a good variety of holes with some very good ones. The 18th is great fun but there are lots of other great challenges. SOme of the internal out of bounds posts seem a bit odd and make for a couple of very tight tee shots. Also, some of the bunkers have very little sand in them and it can be that you're hitting off of clay.. impossible! Good fun to play though and the clubhouse is good o. The staff are very freindly and helpful. Overall I would throughly recommend it to anyone...

  • 4.5 out of 5 Excellent course & very well looked after by all at WMGC

Being quite new to golf I often find the prospect of playing at a respectable course quite intimidating (small fish in a big pond etc) WMGC is quite the opposite.  A very friendly atmosphere, great staff and every one on the course we encountered made us feel more than welcome. The visit started with a senior gentleman staff member to confirm our booking.  He took the time to explain a few tips and hints to us (although probably beyond our golfing capabilities!) and ensured we were at ease for our visit. The gentleman advised us to play the back 9 first as a group of 8 seniors were infront of us and didnt wan't us to get held up and he also apologised for not letting us know in advance (not that this was a problem at all, as the seniors were probably more acomplished on the course than us!) As we left the club house to head to the 10th tee he assured us the 1st would be free for us as we came back from the excellent par 3 island 18th.  Sure enough a marshall had spotted us on the 18th and informed the staff member who greeted us on the 1st tee where he had kept it free for us. Unfortunately due to being 8am and freezing December conditions, the first 6 holes were played on temporary greens (as expected so as to preserve condition).  However, our host, unprompted offered us a free round due to the "inconvieniance" incurred due to this and playing the back 9 first. I cannot really give an honest view of the course from an experienced golfers perspective as I haven't played too many courses to compare it too. However it is by far the best conditioned, challenging, enjoyable round I have played and would seriously consider membership here. Widney Manor, Pype Hayes Municipal, Amington, Stonebridge, St Thomas Priory are the only courses I have played and West Midlands Golf course is a standout mile infront of them as an overall experience.  Excellent course, fantastic hospitality highly reccommended.

  • 4 out of 5 driver heaven.

Cracking course. super greens and fairways. As well as the signature 18th, there are a couple of great par 5's, A high enough approach to the 12th green and I'm sure you could bring down one of the planes coming to land at B'ham airport! dont be put off by that though, its a great sight. the 13th, which is a long down hill I managed 390yrd drive!! (off the path of course). The club shop isnt particularly good nor is the welcome from the some of the staff, but the bar and restuarant are superb, with a patio overlooking the 18th green so you can watch the others losing balls in the drink too. Quite an open course so hire a buggy to keep you out of the wind and rain. buggies are good fun and easy to use. fitted with gps too. Lacks a driving range but one is planned we are told

  • 3.5 out of 5 game maker game breaker!

    By tabikat

good course, especially as so new. will get even better with age and growth of tree's. The 18th island green (copy of 17th @sawgrass) is a game maker or breaker, but so much fun! was in good condition but worryingly had winter greens marked out already?! ...very enjoyable!
