Short-but-ever-so-sweet century-old Herbert Fowler heathland widely regarded as Cheshire’s No.1 inland layout though nationally it doesn’t get the recognition it warrants and indeed deserves.

The Delamere Forest Golf Club was founded in 1910, reputedly in a hunting  field, and was designed by W.H. Fowler who was also responsible for legendary Surrey venue Walton Heath.

The early list of members reads like an extract from the Cheshire Hunt register.  Delamare Forest Golf Club was the venue for the first Cheshire County Championship in 1921, an event which has been held at the Club on another seven occasions most recently in 1993 and 2004. 

In 1967 Delamere Forest was one of the two qualifying courses for the Open Championship when it was held at Hoylake.

  This is an excellent test of all round ability to play skilful golf. Superb greens and beautiful views make Delamere a course to remember which most people do. This is itself is a great recommendation to try it out. Invariably open everyday of the year it is a wonderful winter course as not far below the surface is sand. This makes it a quick drying all year round course. Don't miss the opportunity to try it. You'll simply love it.

  I have looked forward to playing Delamere for many years and finally played there yesterday. It is a lovely course and a real gem but it is slightly floored for the visitor. There are many blind shots and an view of the hole in the form of a map of some kind on the tee would have been advantageous, but there is no doubting the quality of the course and it's surroundings. Our fourball had heard storys of snooty members and snobbery to visitors but found no problems and were welcomed by the pro and in the club shop. Bar and shop prices are reasonable, bottled water £1, 2 pints and 3 packs of crisps £7. The weather was far too hot to have a perfect day and we had to let a few 2 balls through but all in all we had an excellent days golf, birdieing the 18th to take the money capped it off.

  Delamere is such a delight to play. From the moment you turn into the drive you lose yourself in the tranquillity of the place, That is if you find the place to start with! Sentiments echo that if you picked the course up and placed it in the Surrey / Berkshire sand belt then Delamere would not be out of place. Much has changed recently mainly to the clubhouse facility. The new pro shop and visiting changing room are most impressive and blend seamlessly into existing traditional Cheshire clubhouse, a facility to match the wonderful course. I noticed the club are instigating a programme to retain the “Heathland Feel” or “Our Heathland Gem” as the club call it. You’ve only got to look at heathland programmes undertaken atWalton Heath and Worplesdon to understand the merits of protecting this delightful style of course. I so enjoy playing here and with the removal of silver birch and the re-generation of heather and gorse it is only going to make golfing here even more enjoyable. For years Delamere was known as a hidden gem, well if you haven’t found the place in the clubs first 100 years, (Delamere celebrates their Centenary this year) then make the effort.

  The only thing i have marked this course down on was the welcome I know things have changed at Delemere but you are still very much the second class citizen where the members we came across were concerned.Apart from that after the links in the northwest and i mean Hillside and the likes this course is the best go play it ......
