Macclesfield Golf Club

What we say

A pleasant golf course on the edge of the Pennines with breathtaking views across the Cheshire Plain. But it’s no stroll in the park – there are plenty of troublespots so spot-on course management is a must.

The golf club was formed in 1889 with golf being played on the current site, albeit as a nine-holer, for more than a century. Macclesfield was finally upgraded to 18-hole status in 1990.

Macclesfield is certainly a hilly layout with a few blind drives and it isn't a long course with it measuring about 5500 yards from the middle tees. You may say that it is too short and that a lack of water hazards may put you off. However, as I have played the course several times you start to realise the true beauty of the course with many tricky and narrow drives and many spectular vistas on most of the holes that I feel no other golf course has in this country. The course also has many tricky shots to play such as the drive of the 8th which doglegs from right to left playing over lake. If you go over the trees at the corner of the dogleg and land on the fairway then your ball bounces on to leave with a good chance of a birdie. However if you go in the lake or stay on the top of the plateau then there is a good chance you won't make par. This risk and reward is also in play on the many other holes including the third with the second shot being played over a deep valley stream. The conditions of the course are very good all year round due to the fact that it is situated on a hill meaning that the drainage is impecable. The greens are very challenging especially on the back nine and with the addition of a few new bunkers, the position and the quality of them is very impressive. I know many people that are put off playing the course as they feel that it is too hilly and too short. However, I tell you this. I will never ever become tired of playing at Macclesfield golf club. If you live in the area or want to make the trip to play there, then I certainly suggest you do.
