Eden Golf Club – Championship Course

What we say

Opened in 1991, Eden has matured into an extremely attractive golf course receiving great praise from visiting golfers for it's immaculate condition, beautiful environment and above all it's ability to test golfers without being unfair.

The fairways wind their way through the fifty acres of woodland around which the course is designed although tremendous views of the Pennine and Lakeland fells are still afforded on various parts of the course.

The river Eden is very much a hazard on holes 4 and 5 where a sliced ball is not advised. Water is in play on several other holes including the short par four 11th, where a good drive might be on the green but the slightest deviation will lead to a dropped shot.

On the whole the course design welcomes the driver with most fairways open enough to tempt the ambitious, however the ever present threat of timber will catch out the reckless. The opening nine is marginally easier than the back nine where the testing 14th and 15th can be a challenge to your card just as your concentration is beginning to wane. Wildlife are numerous on the course with families of swans nesting on the lakes as well as mallard, moorhens, hares and the occasional roe deer.

The course holds several county and inter county events each year and tends to be home to the county squad through the winter.

  • 4 out of 5 A big improver

Prior to my recent visit I had last played Eden 7 years ago. It has come on considerably and is a much improved course. The fairways were in fantastic condition and I couldn't fault the greens either. The green fees are a bit steep (£50), but the 2-fore-1 vouchers make it much more appealing. All on all an enjoyable round of golf.

A planned visit to the Eden GC near Carlisle was preceded by lunch in the clubhouse. A typical menu of about half a dozen items, Lasagne, Steak & Ale pie plus a fair selection of sandwiches and lighter bites as well. Special mention must go to the home made cakes on display, totally irresistible! Being early we managed a bucket of balls on the range first. Good value at £1 for 30, just right for a warm up. The course looked in pristine condition with quite a modern clubhouse overlooking the 18th green. Chairs on the terrace outside making a pleasant location for an after round cooling drink. At 6179 yards off the yellows and a fairly flat layout, it was not overly long, especially on the hot day we were there. Lots of mature trees lining the not too wide fairways meant anything wayward was duly punished, but usually findable, but made you want to use the driver on the next hole as well.  Accuracy is certainly ancouraged!  The course certainly looked older than its 18 years, a tribute to the ground staff, I think. The greens were as good as the rest of the course and the whole design was to be commended the only negative being the need to cross a road, albeit minor, four times during the round. The river Eden makes an appearance over a few holes in the opening 9 and a par-saver is highly recommended for a first time visit. Being in a fairly quiet part of England, there was abundant wildlife around, from a heron to mallards and even a hare basking in the afternoon sunshine. Good value using 2-fore-1 and a course I would really like to re-visit.
