Windermere Golf Club

What we say

Courses don’t come much more scenic than this magical layout at the heart of the Lake District and boasting quality USGA-spec greens. There’s not a single bunker to negotiate though there are three 200-yard plus par 3s!

If you enjoy stunning backdrops, this is one place in the Lake District that offers them in abundance. The layout at Windermere is also inspiring so be sure to pack your clubs the next time you escape to the magical Cumbrian Lakes.

Windermere Golf Club was formed in 1891 and was initially a nine hole, although 18 months later it became an 18-hole layout. However, the Second World War meant the golf course was reduced to nine holes again owing to a shortage of staff – key personnel were all serving in HM forces. It wasn’t until 1946 that Windermere became an 18 holer again.

Records show that in 1920 the golf course measured 4,320 yards and a number of holes were not just par 3, 4 and 5s: the opening hole was a four-and-a-half while the two three-and-a-halves were on the back nine.

  • 5 out of 5 Breathtaking views

Very hilly course so recommend hiring a motor caddy from the club shop £8. Although the course is short it is full of hazards so you need to be accurate off the Tee. The greens are in excellent condition and very fast. The views are some of the most breathtaking you will see on a golf course.

Stunning views on a clear day like we had 3rd week in September. Pro generously allowed us on with County Cards so it was £20 and well worth it. Greens had been hollow-tined a fortnight previously and were still recovering (lack of rain?) which probably cost us 4 - 5 shots each as the ball skipped about uncontrollably. A short course at 5,200 yards off the whites, with a few blind tee shots. Would play it again for 20 notes, and certainly if the greens were in better condition as there's not much else in the vicinity.

Was visiting Windermere for a week on hols. Decided to have a round in a spare afternoon. Found this a very nice and welcoming course. A very tight course with very little room for error, but as you will read below if you can keep it straight and sensible a very credible score is very much there for the taking. Greens were being worked on but still did not effect the roll of the ball on the greens ( fee was adjusted accordingly ). The ball was still staying on green when hit in from distance. Would visit again but would be a little disgruntled if had paid like below £56 for round , not worth that in my view even with the lovely views and elevated tees.

  • 4 out of 5 Fantastic for Match

    By Helz1980

Played windemere last friday, bit worried about having to pay for a day ticket if i produced 2 for 1 vouchers. However the pro said it would be cheaper to pay the actual winter green fees of  £25 - good start there. Found the course to be in great condition, it was a gorgeous sunny day as well so that helped, wouldnt fancy it when its blowing a hoolly. Some of the tees had winter mats which arent ideal but as we were going round, there were being removed...... Kinda felt as though i needed to be a mountain goat on some holes! Great welcome by the bar staff, turns out they knew folk that my OH knew! All in all a good experience, good food as well. Thoroughly recommended

although undeniably breath taking, with marvellous views, I find it hard to understand how they can justify £56 for 18 holes (through the week). The fairways are very narrow and the rough is penal, but, there are no bunkers on the course & you,ve no need to carry a driver or indeed 3 wood as none of the holes are long enough. I only play of 18, but if you swing smooth, keep the ball on the short stuff and don't get overly ambitious on your approaches, you will get round with a very creditable score on your card. I found the club house to be a very pleasent place to be to reflect on the days highlights. The balcony with views over the putting green is very welcoming, unfortunately, the members whom I encountered, were not so. they seem to be rather pompous and unfortunatly, what outsiders to the game would consider to be stereo typical golfers. Needless to say, I shall not be handing over my hard earned money to play there again.

  • 3.5 out of 5 good looking short but tricky

I was visiting windermere for the fishing and managed to get a round in at this course. The staff in the shop were friendly enough and helpful. Had to buy a day ticket with my 2 4 1 voucher even though I could only play one round. With the cost being £56 my round cost £28 which was on the heavy side. Being up from Essex and having to go back that afternoon I obviously paid my money and bit my tongue. The course was really good fun. The views were fantastic. The course is short and the holes tend to criss cross each other due to lack of land. However the greens and fairways were in very good condition and it was great to play. Loads of interesting and tricky holes. Wish I had been able to play it again.
