Linden Hall Golf Club

What we say

Well worth stopping off the A1 for, may be en-route to more familiar courses north of the border? It’s the home of a fine Macdonald stay and play venue and the well established parkland layout is always in excellent condition and boasts a particularly impressive set of par-3s, sitting in 450 acres. The Jonathan Gaunt-designed layout is a serious test of parkland golf and features some stunning par 3s with the 4th and 7th being the pick of the bunch. You’re firing from elevated tees and need to clear water to find both greens. Other star holes include the double dog-leg 13th and the superb par-4 finale while you’ll also be impressed by the great views over the Cheviot Hills.

  • 4 out of 5 Wet under foot even after a little rain.

Fantastic variety of holes and good facilities. However drainage is a problem. Played in May and every bunker had at least 2ft of water in and was a bog just off the fairways. That said in the summer and on a good day this is a course to enjoy. Loads of wildlife including deer. Best hole for me is the 6th. Dog leg right needing 2 long irons to reach. 18th is a card destroyer!

Played this 3 times in the Last month (March 2011) once on the Great North Golf Tour with a Gross 116 off my 18 handicap in poor weather. The course itself is well designed with masses of variety and some fantastic par 3's which I always think can set a course apart, which in this case they do. This is overall a very well designed layout with good practice facilities, friendly pro-staff and great 19 hole and service therein. The real down side for me was the green, which were very poor (although under maintenance and early in the season). The staff assured me that they were on top of the problems and to be fair the shape and contours of the greens lead me to believe that they can be great, but they were the thing that spoilt my experience of a great layout. To me if I 3-putt once its my fault, but I walked off the course each time with over 38 putts and for me that is 4+ shots wasted. I plan to give it another shot in the summer and will re-visit this review then.
