London Scottish

What we say

One of England’s oldest clubs, a game here on Wimbledon Common is like stepping back in time. The course meanders over the Common, swooping past mature trees, gorse and rough. As play is over common land all players must wear red to distinguish themselves from walkers.

The London Scottish Golf Club was organised as a club by members of the London Scottish Rifle Volunteers on 5th November 1864 after a shooting match held on the Common by the National Rifle Association.
The NRA was inaugurated by Queen Victoria in 1860.
The Club was adopted into the London Scottish Rifle Volunteers, as shown by a Regimental Order to that effect dated 2nd May 1866.
The London Scottish Golf Club's first headquarters were situated at Mrs Doggett's cottage under the shadow of the Windmill.

A short course. But a tight one. The important thing to shoot low is to stay straight off the tee, so hitting a low iron/ wood for improved accuracy is greatly recommended however this interesting course has many short drive-able par-4s which tempt golfers to push their distance, leading them into a swipe that often leads to the ball ending up into the unplayable fern bushes and trees that line the holes just yards from the fairway. The long par 3s (229, 231, and 247 yards respectively) provide a real test, and the greens are outstanding for a course open to the runners and dog-walkers of the common - which can often be very frustrating. However, the fairways are of a low standard and the club is unable to put in bunkers due to the public so simply being straight almost guarantees a par even if you thin it. Furthermore, the members are very friendly and are always open to pairing up with the lone golfer, and the club shares a warm rivalry with the Wimbledon Common Golf Club which unusually share the same course! This course is easily accesssible to those in the london/surrey area and provides a cheap option for the budget golfers however don't expect to be wow-ed by the quality of the course.
