St Mellion Hotel and Golf Club - Kernow Course

What we say

Formerly the Old Course, this layout has undergone a major refurbishment in recent times and is now a splendid complement to the mighty Nicklaus. It features a great mix of holes, the pick being the sensational par-3 14th.

Originally designed and set out by J Hamilton Stutt in 1976, it soon became recognised as one of the finest courses in the South West, playing host to the Benson & Hedges International Open in 1979, followed by the Tournament Players Championship and the Weetabix Ladies British Open.

With the arrival of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in 1988, the Kernow course was somewhat overshadowed, until in 2008 it was completely redeveloped, incorporating 9 of the original holes, extended and modernised, along with nine exciting new holes. With wider fairways, larger greens and spectacular views the Kernow course is a wonderful complement to the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course.

The new layout includes the 7th, a par three measuring over 200yds, followed by a stunning new 530yd par 5, while the outstanding 179 yd par three over the chasm has been incorporated as the new 14th hole and the 18th hole now brings your round to a close at the club house.

  • 4 out of 5 Beautiful course and scenery, a wonderful course to play

    By Joeyboy

The keen ow course is a beautiful course with superb scenery. The par 3 14 being e pick of the holes. It surpassed my expectations by a long way as I thought the Nicklaus course was the main attraction, but the kernow holds its own and competes with the Nicklaus. The only reason its not a five star is because as the Nicklaus is just better there would be no room for six stars on a review of that course!

  • 4 out of 5 2 for 1 Vouchers

Having recently played the Kernow course i must say it was fantastic. However i did leave with a bitter taste in my mouth for the following reason. I booked a 4 ball on the 2 for 1 scheme after 4pm, due to other players work commitments, and noticed on the website the Kernow course after 4pm was £25. Having booked over the telephone nothing was mentioned about if you book using this scheme you actually pay full price regardless of the time you tee off. So rather than paying £12,50 each it actually cost each of us £23 charging us £46 for the round. We would have been better off not using the vouchers and paying £25 each for the round, bearing in mind the vouchers cost around £5. Maybe something St Mellion should be aware of and other golfers!

I and 2 mate are members of the Crown Golf society, and as such were able to play the courses for free as part of our membership. We went for 2 days at the start of jun ( mon and tues) and it cost us £89 for the nite between the 3 of us in one room. The Nicklaus course was amazing, a real test ( we play of 12/13/15) for each of us, and if you miss the fairway, you pay big time. take your medicine, and chip out. You have to play smart, but with some truly stunning holes, you have to play your shots. The old course was disapointing, prehaps as we played the Nicklaus course first, but it was being redeveloped when we were ther, and no its reopened with the new holes and layout, we are going back in september. Trust me folks, its worth a visit....

Loved playing the course. Not too expensive lovely cafe and freindly staff. If you stay at the lodges at oakridge you get half price green fees and free rounds on the old course which is a challenge in itself

We played here on a Golfbreaks weekend, we were upgraded to a superb lodge on...'Olazabal Drive' set jusyt a few mins shuttle bus ride (provided by the course) from the restaurant....Old Course is a 7/10 with some lovely undulating fairways but not much (apart from tree-lined fairways) in the way of trouble. The Nicklaus course is the finest course ive played in the UK. Some utterly breathtaking holes my favourite was the 12th but there are so many gems here all a real challenge. its a real walk but playing this course is an absolute must!!

Played this course in August a couple of times and really enjoyed it. The tees were getting ready for some Senior Tour event and I gave them the benefit of the doubt because it was fun to play. A long walk but a thinking persons course. No driving off every tee, and Jack obviously enjoys the fade shot. The course got me on day one but changed strategy the following day and played to handicap of 8. I know this course has it's critics but we are going back because we had a cracking time, and good all round laugh. The greens are excellent, the standards expected high, and it's just great to play a course that the great man has built. I can't think why anyone would be disappointed in a visit here, unless they have the privelege of playing the top courses reegularly. We love it, and the plush facilities. It's one you have at least got to try.
