Painswick Golf Club

What we say

Painswick is one of the most interesting and best-value golf courses in England – hence its high position in our Golf World Top 100 Courses in Great Britain and Ireland £60 and Under ranking.

Some will find it bewildering, but we think most will be endlessly entertained by the green complexes and a routing that crosses itself on more than one occasion because it has to fit along a narrow ridge.

Barely 5,000 yards – and outrageous fun. It will almost certainly rank as one of the most fun, quirkiest courses you’re ever likely to play.

It’s fewer than 5,000 yards of golf on high with its elevated position meaning it provides commanding Cotswold views as well as, unusually, seven short holes including the unique 114-yard 5th played blindly up and over 70ft high hill fort ramparts dating back to the Iron Age.

You’ll also encounter several tempting short par-4s but you should be aware of the tiny, not-easy-to-hit greens including the miniscule dancefloor at the 120-yard par-3 10th.

  • 4.5 out of 5 Not for the faint-hearted

I was a member here for a few years and absolutely loved the course.  There is certainly plenty of variety, with some amazing views, as the course plays around Painswick Beacon and over an Iron Age fort.  The only couple of negative ponts being the course has public rights of way through it and the walkers don't always adhere to the paths.  Also, there are a few shared fairways that can slow you down a bit.  The course calls for controlled and accurate play, where any long, wild tee shots are not rewarded.  Highly recommended though.

This is a wonderful course. The undulations of the land are used perfectly (although questions have to be asked about who looked at the landscape and thought 'yep. Golf Course!'). The condition of the course was superb and it was a wonderful round. Absolutally loved this!
