  • 4 out of 5 woodland gem

Autumn golf at its best I have been writing reviews of local courses for the last ten years. I have played some absolute crackers during that period but I keep coming back to my old favourites that I would play time and time again. Moors Valley is right up in their my top three courses for many reasons. I have played the scenic woodland course about 15 times and it gets better each time I tee off. Not only have I shot my best ever round there, 83 last time out, it just feels special every time I drive up past the 17th hole and the glistening stream by the side of the tee. The customer service is second to none, I am always afforded a warm welcome! That in itself means a lot as you are comfortable before you start. The 19th hole certainly provides welcome cheer after a tough 18 holes as well, serving a varied selection of beverages and providing a hearty bar menu. The course itself is short in length at 5900 or so yards, but it more than makes up for it in its intricate design and well structured holes. I have said it before in previous reviews that the picturesque, outlying countryside adds to the ambience of the course as it exudes tranquility and natural beauty. Golfers I see on the course always seem very relaxed and this is testimony to the course itself. 4 hours walking in the beautiful countryside whilst playing the game we love, I am not sure life gets any better. Cyclists, dog walkers and ramblers utilising the countryside park itself merely add to the all round experience. I have shot anything from 83 to 110 at Moors Valley and there are holes on the course that still leave me gasping. I love the par 4 fifteenth which is a beast. It has a sprawling fairway which seems to carry on for miles. The bottom line is you need a great drive just to give yourself a chance of reaching green in two. Again, you need a great strike to actually get your second up there. I normally am happy to walk off with 5, but the last time I played, I reached the green in two for the first time ever. A 26 foot birdie putt followed, and I walked to the 16th in raptures. Moors Valley is a challenge for any golfer and is a treat to boot. I have recommended the course to all my friends and to a man, they have all loved the experience. I can't give any higher praise than that. Simon Thorpe

Superb course and very challenging in places, tricky par 3's and a couple of monster par 4's, but a couple of easy one's to level it out. Great condition in a lovely setting which is worth anyone playing.
