  • 4 out of 5 Picturesque Paultons

    By Thorpie

Paultons Golf Centre, Ower I have to say I have always enjoyed playing Paultons golf course from the time I first picked up a club 5 years ago. I suppose it holds a soft spot in my heart as it was the first course I ever played (well humiliated myself at) all those years hence. From the dizzy and embarrassing lows of 128 that first round to a respectable 86 last Thursday, I have felt an affinity with this Hampshire course like no other! Considering the recent weather, the course looked a picture in the early morning mist and my golfing juices began to flow on the long winding drive to the clubhouse! As I peered into the beyond on the friendly opening hole aptly named Paultons Drop, I felt a rush of adrenaline, a feeling that today was going to be an extraordinary day! I ripped a drive to within 20 yards of the green and somewhat proudly strode towards my ball! As an 18 handicapper, consistency is a problem, so I always revel in any straight drive! A neat little chip to 8 feet was satisfying and a solid putt into the heart of the hole for a birdie 3 was much more than I could have expected especially as it was my first round in weeks! A 7 followed at ‘Oatfield’ which was disappointing as I had reached the fringes of the green in 3, but as I said, I am an inconsistent 18 handicapper. What I should point out here is that Paultons looked an absolute picture. The greens on the opening two holes were smooth and beautifully kept and the fairways were lush and deep in colour! Considering the time of year, it was a joy to behold! I continued to drive well on the front 9 and kept giving myself chances of pars. Whatever my failings were, it had nothing to do with the course. I finished the opening 9 holes in 41 shots, my best ever return and was conservatively optimistic of a score in the low 80’s. The tenth, ‘Home Farm Corner’ which features an extravagant dog leg needs a solid iron into the fairway leaving a mid iron into the green. Anything left and you are in serious trouble!!!! I reached yet another green in two but missed the par putt, but I was still buoyant from the front nine, so the three putt wasn’t too hard to bear. The next four holes were a blur as I struggled to keep my round going amidst an array of wayward approaches. Golf is a cruel mistress when things aren’t going well, and Paultons is no different. I arrived at the 15th ‘Jan’s dilemma, my favourite hole by a mile still in good shape (I’m not sure how) and surveyed the scene with excited trepidation! 161 yards over a sultry, shimmering lake, it doesn’t get any better in golfing terms!!! You still need to strike a solid iron to clear the water though as I am sure the picture wouldn’t be quite as picturesque with your nestling in the deep belly of the lake! I was happy to make 4 as I only just cleared the water, and I set about completing the task in hand on the tricky final three holes! Three 5’s later and 86 shots in total represented my best ever return at Paultons. All in all a glorious day!! It is all well and good me eulogising about a course I like, but if you haven’t played Paultons, you need to try it for yourself. It is a true challenge and reasonably priced to boot. You won’t be disappointed!

This course is very well laid out and to say we had torrential rain in the morning (we went off at 2:10) the conditions were superb. Some testing holes which i found a little difficult but a very enjoyable round on a lovely course. I also concur with the earlier review, the 15th is great !
