Back in the 1800s, fishermen keen on the game that was sweeping the nation built their own rough and ready course near the fishing village of MacDuff on Scotland’s Moray coast. Using cocoa tins for cups and old sticks for flags this was the humble beginnings of Royal Tarlair. A new course was eventually built on a spectacular headland site overlooking the Moray Firth.

It’s worth playing for the spectacular par-3 13th alone. This hole is only about 130 yards, but from an elevated tee you’re hitting over the frothy sea to a green sitting beyond a ravine. The other 17 holes are fairly ordinary, although the course does offer cracking views on a nice day. Also, it’s pretty cheap and, overall, excellent value for money.

The 130-yard par-3 13th, known as ‘Clivet’, may be short, but is played from an elevated tee over the sea to a green tantalisingly perched beyond a ravine. Par is certainly a good score.

The movie 'Local Hero' was shot a few miles from the clubhouse and made the village of Pennan famous.
