Royal Troon, Old Course

What we say

A great challenge and enjoyable too. Super track where the best holes are the ‘Postage Stamp’ and the 11th, where you stand on the tee and wonder where the fairway is!

The Postage Stamp may be one of the shortest holes in championship golf, but it's one of the hardest. At just over 120 yards, this highlight of the round is a mere flick with a wedge, but it's not called the Postage Stamp for nothing – the green is tiny and surrounded by big trouble. The cavernous traps seem to suck in a ball like a casino sucks in John Daly. Gene Sarazen has no such worries when he played at the ripe old age of 72 in the 1973 Open. He didn't even need his putter on the first two days, holing in one on the first day and holing out from a trap on the second. Basically this is do-or-die golf. Hit the elevated, minuscule green set into the side of the large sandhill and protected by a handful of cavernous traps – or else.

Venue for eight Open Championships, Royal Troon is a classic links course with a mixture of quality holes. One of the most famous par-3s in the world being the 8th, or 'Postage Stamp'. Measuring at just over 120 yards from the back tees, you must hit this tiny green or be punished by the surrounding danger.

When the wind is up this is a treacherous test of golf and will require some creative shot-making. The back-nine is the hardest of the two halves and players should aim to make their score on the outward nine.

What a course... every hole is brilliant. And yet it's fairly playable if you go off the tees that best suit your ability. The greens are true but weren't stupidly fast when we played them... The rough was also harsh but fair. A great course and one that will fit kinto most golfer's top 5 or 6 tracks every played. Awesome scenery too. the course is now also easier to get on and a lot cheaper...

Just a really clever course. It sucks you into going for it, but it's tight and the rough is.... rough! Awesome to play some of the most famous holes in golf though - I parred the Postage Stamp. Come on!
