The Drivers Test 2014: Cleveland 588 Custom
Cost: £279.
Tech: A variable thickness “MAX COR” face boosts ball speeds away from the sweetspot. Sole weight, loft, lie and face angle are all adjustable. Now has a 460cc clubhead.
What we said… James Ridyard: “The classic look stands out from the more common shapes. A very light feeling shaft increased speed and produced good distance.” Joel Tadman: “The black with gold trim really works. The shaft feels too long and the grip too thin – both contributing to a lack of control. Felt like it came off the face fast.” Stephen Kidd: “It wasn’t overly forgiving, but I like the adjustability; adding 0.75°of loft got me 8 more yards!” Steve Milnes: “The adjustability reduced my curve and upped my launch. Impressive performance.”
Pros: Great look, feel and lots to adjust.
Cons: Stock shaft a touch weak. Not long.
