Irons Test 2014: Adams New Idea
Cost: £499 steel, £599 graphite
Tech: An iron set with hybrids, transitional hybrids and irons all with Velocity Slots boosting distance and forgiveness.
What we said… James Ridyard: “While you get the added confidence of the bulk in the clubhead, the actual face size isn’t massive. Even the mid irons have a hybrid design, which launches the ball high and is difficult to curve offline regardless of strike. It feels hot and stays in the air for a long time.” Adam Holdgate: “They look relatively short from heel-to-toe but large from front-to-back. Looking down at a mini hybrid in a mid iron doesn’t suit my eye. You instantly notice the light feel, mainly down to the 56g graphite shaft. It’s hard to hit a bad shot.”
Pros: Easy to launch and generate fast swing speeds.
Cons: Mid-irons are chunky. Not ideal into the wind.
