Cleveland 588 Altitude

Irons Test 2014: Cleveland 588 Altitude

Cost: £449 steel £499 graphite

Tech: With this hybrid iron set, Altitude irons feature a bendable hosel to adjust lie angle, and can be easily interchanged with 588 MT and TT models at no extra cost.

What we said… James Ridyard: “The face has loads of bulk behind it. A heavy head but light 85g shaft increased clubhead speed but didn’t feel particularly well balanced. It has a very different metallic sound and clicky feel but sends the ball out there. Forgiveness levels were sky high but the topline is too chunky.” Adam Holdgate: “I don’t like how chunky head makes me feel like a beginner, but found it easy to strike well. The flight was very high and I lost out on distance. Lower swing speeds may appreciate what it offers more.”

Pros: High flight and forgiveness ideal for low swing speeds.

Cons: A little too large.
