Irons Test 2014: Cleveland 588 MT
Cost: £449 steel £499 graphite
Tech: Unparalleled combination of forgiveness and feel and fully inter-changeable with 588 TT and Altitude irons.
What we said… James Ridyard: “You can see the back of long irons, which is off-putting. The heads are some of the biggest in the category, but are easy to line up and felt extremely hot. The wide soles would work well from poor lies.” JT: “It’s a good shape. Offset’s minimal but the top line is too thick. Feels soft but with a clicky sound, a strange combination.” GG: “Solid feel, easy to hit straight, forgiveness was high. Matt finish on striking area works.” Adam Holdgate: “Results didn’t blow me away but you can’t fault the forgiveness on offer.”
Pros: Forgiving, long and high-launching.
Cons: Some may want a more penetrating ball flight.
