Irons Test 2014: TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC
Cost: £849 steel
Tech: Combines a player’s shape with a shallow “muscle cavity” to boost MOI. The 3-7-irons boast a Speed Pocket to make ball speeds consistent across the entire face.
What we said... JR: “Medium head size. The straight leading edge and mid topline makes them encouraging to hit. Certainly felt hot when struck properly and off-centre hits didn’t lose significant distance. Decent KBS Tour shaft helped me achieve my highest club speeds.” JT: “The top edge is pretty thick but the head has a lot of better-player features. It feels hot but hard, like the ball comes off fast. One of the more forgiving irons in this category and it’s nice to see traditional lofts.”
Pros: Quality components and innovative tech that works.
Cons: Top line a little too chunky for purists.
