Wilson D-100

Irons Test 2014: Wilson D-100

Cost: £349 steel £429 graphite

Tech: Distance and forgiveness comes via a thin clubface that helps deliver faster ball speeds for 10 more yards.

What we said… James Ridyard: “It’s got a nice shape to it and a decent DG shaft. I got a very high flight but the ball still carried a long way. The lie angle felt upright and I was fighting the ball going left initially; the offset contributed to this. The ball seemed to climb, which limited versatility and shot-shaping ability.” Adam Holdgate: “I really like this, my favourite in this category. Long and easy to hit. The look is simple, how a golf club should look. Both good and bad shots went pretty straight, which everyone will enjoy.”

Pros: Long and controllable. Easy to get airborne despite strong lofts.

Cons: High flight reduces appeal in windy conditions.
