PING Si3 Driver Review

The first version of the Ping Si3 Driver that came out last year was a rather old-looking 340cc that one wag described, not inaccurately, as a “brick on a stick”. The latest 380cc model features a more rounded back and will have a broader appeal.

That’s good news, because this is a solid, if unspectacular, club whose great strength is its accuracy. If you’re the sort of golfer who struggles to find the fairway from the tee, the Si3 might just come to your rescue.

The first thing you notice is the particularly deep face, encouraging you to tee the ball high and give it a rip. The feeling at impact off the fully forged face is softer than most – even a bit ‘spongy’ if you want to be hyper-critical – and perhaps this contributes to a feeling that is not the most powerful driver around.

However, all three testers produced a series of effortlessly straight drives, backing up anecdotal evidence that there’s something in the weighting of the Si3 that seems to prevent slight fades turning into fully fledged slices and draws becoming hooks. If accuracy is more important that distance on your course, the Ping Si3 could well be the driver for you.

Verdict: The Si3 won’t be breaking any long-drive records, but for putting the ball on the short stuff it’s Mr Reliable.
